Can you mix kalk with tank water..vs useing it as a ato? Wondering if its ok..thinking of running it off a timer on a apex controller vs a ato..

I'm new do kalk and reactors so I wanted to ask my peeps on here

Kalkwasser is meant for fresh water only. What some people do is mix the kalk, let it settle, then use the "clearish" water above the kalk to top up the tank. Kalk stirrers are quite pricey, the idea is that it always keeps the kalk "mixed" so that the top up water is useful.

You can make a kalk stirrer for pretty cheap. There are a lot of examples out there. If you mix it with salt water, you are letting the kalk powder, that doesnt' disolve, float around the tank and possibly settle on corals, burning them.

I have never tried it or seen anyone else that has. I don't know if the saturation point of the tank water is the same as ro/di water. The reactor mixes it up and only the water saturated with kalk is dosed into the tank so I'm not sure if the ro/di water is just more efficient when it comes to being saturated with the kalk. That would be the only reason I can see why ro/di is always used. I'm no chemist so I'll see if I can find anything on it. Good question.

I have the same question. My tank is getting to a point where it uses more calcium than I can supplement via adding kalkwasser to the ATO water. I'd just like to set up a constant flow doser to suck tank water and pass it through the kalkwasser stirrer and send it back to the tank at a specific flow every minute. That way I can leave the ATO to do it's job separately.
