Kalk vs. 2 part

They both work great .
Kalk is cheaper to buy and use because u can just add it to your auto top off and u won't need any additional dosers .
I dosed kalk for years until it could no longer keep up with my alk demand .
Kalk is also great with keeping your ph up.
Lately I have been using kalk in my ato and just supplementing a little alk to keep up with the demand of my tank .

I agree exactly with the folks above, except limewater is sufficient for my system.

FWIW, I compare all of the pros and cons of the various methods for calcium and alkalinity supplementation in an upcoming article.

I stopped using kalk for 3 reasons, it wasn't strong enough, I added the kalk pre-ATO pump so it made for more maintenance as it would clog up, and I would have to make the kalk more often. With 2 part and dosers I only need to make new solution every month or so.

In terms of the time to make it, I make up limewater less than once a month, and it takes less than 10 minutes of work time to make 120 gallons. :)

Well yea, but you're Randy! I can't store 120g. My biocube ato holds 1g and my larger tank is around 10g container. It would be nice to have room for that...

I have mine in the basement.

That would be your tornado shelter for Iowa folks. :D

Now that is the truth! Next tornado we have I will be in the basement and I will be thinking, "wow, I could make up so much kalk right now"!

Either that or I will have to explain to my girlfriend, who is from the east coast and not used to hiding in the basement from tornadoes, that there is no more room for her cats (yes, her cats...) because of my new huge kalk mixing station.

I mix up about 20 gallons per week and is literally takes one minute. Throw the powder in and stir for 30 seconds. The only issue with kalk is that I go though a lot more top off water in the winter so I have to adjust according. No big deal.
