Trying to figure this out for the first time.

Using: https://www.hamzasreef.com/Contents/Calculators/KalkContribution.php

The Kalk Solution Preparation part doesn't seem to be working for me. Doesn't matter what I put in Mass of Kalk Added and Volume of Water Added, it always returns as 877.25 for calcium and 123.43 for Alkalinity.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for the confirmation. I thought it was me! Have emailed him.

Please let us know what he says :)

Very quick and thorough explanation from Hamza. :) Makes complete sense now. He has now modified the calculator to make it more obvious to newbies like me :D

Japtastic, sorry to hear that! Can you tell me what parameters you are using?

877.25 ppm Calcium is the maximum dissolved calcium concentration for Kalkwasser so, for example, 35g of Ca(OH)2 in 5 Gallons or 35g of Ca(OH)2 in 3 Gallons will both have a dissolved Calcium concentration of 877.25 ppm. The reality is that in the 3 Gallons scenario a bunch of Kalk will remain undissolved as slush/powder in the solution.

If you try 35g of Ca(OH)2 in 10 Gallons you will find the concentration reduced to 500.13 ppm.

The story is the same for Alkalinity. One way to notice this is that the once the “Percent Saturation” reaches 100%, decreasing the Volume of Water Added or increasing the Mass of Kalk Added will not raise this number any higher.

If this is what you are running into let me see if I can make it more obvious in the calculator.

Thanks,

Hamza

I’ve updated the calculator with a new “Mass of Kalk Undissolved” field in the output to make it more clear when the solution is at maximum saturation. I’ll run this through a few people to make sure it’s working correctly – it would be great if you could take a stab at it and make sure it work for you.

Nice! I was actually thinking it was saturated but I tried lower numbers and it didn’t change. Guess not low enough :)

Thanks for sharing what you learned!

There are some great people in this hobby :)
