ok the more i read the more i get lost
someone tell how to use this stuff
i am going to get a top off system so i add it to the ro water and bamm thats it do i need to keep the water moving in the holding tank?
i just dont get it

It is actually so easy this caveman can do it!

All you do is take RODI water and mix in 1 to 2 tsp per gallon. Let it settle out and then drip the Kalk into a high flow area of your tank or sump. Depending on how big your tank is you don't want to add too much too fast as it really effects PH levels.

I have seen A TON of posts related to this, and for everyone's benefit, i am going to add my two cents because i had the same questions....okay...there are many ways to deliver Kalk to your system....the big thing here is you don't want to deliver too much too fast...that is when bad things can happen...so i decided to take the slow road when i started....for me this meant not running out and purchasing a reactor right away....but something that can deliver it even slower, like a gravity fed doser....kent marine has several...and depending on your set up you can build your own.....but a doser with a IV type connection or even a micro valve that is used in air line tubing can do the trick...you just want something to control the drip rate.

Also, very important in my mind, was a pinpoint PH monitor....I figured spend the money on a monitor instead of a reactor at first...my thinking is let me "see" exactly what i am doing, while i am doing it...

the mixing of the kalk: most kalk says 2 tsp per gallon. You can adjust downward to decrease potency, and anything over that really won't help because the water cannot absorb it....
what i do is mix my kalk in a five gallon water cooler type container.....I let the mixture settle overnight. Next day, I decant and pour the solution into my doser. I decant so that the kalk that settles stays in the water cooler and too much does not end up in the doser....some of it will, you can't help that, but by decanting and pouring it from the first mixing container into the doser, you minimize the transfer of the kalk. after eight or so hours of settling, the water has absorbed as much of the kalk as possible, and you have residue at the bottom. you can use the residue again when mix your next batch, only now you may not need to add as much when you remix.....your just gonna have to play around to figure it out...hence the ph monitor....this will tell you if batch is too strong or too weak...also it well tell you if your drip rate is too fast or too slow...when actually dosing the calc, it most certainly will increase the ph. and this is a very desirable effect...you just don't want it racing up in like 30 seconds....now keep in mind, if you drip right next to the probe, of course this will give you a high reading, so if you can, drip into a high flow rate in your sump away from the probe and you literally watch and see how the calc affect your ph....i got it to the point where my ph settled at night time to around 7.95 and then by the end of my light cycle during the day, i was up to 8.25. I dripped at night only, and now i drip 24/7.

hope this helps...feel free to pm me or post if you have more q's...

I just dump a half a bag into my Top off water barrel (50g) about once a month. It gets mixed up when i fill the barrel which is about once or twice a week. About every six months I rinse the barrel out.

Thats a nice way to do it. How big of a bag of kalk are you using? What brand? Are you using kalk as your primary source of calcium?

Using Mrs Wages Pickling Lime, not sure what size it is but i have only seen one size at WallyWorld. The undissolved lime settles to the bottom and the next time I fill it gets mixed up and a little more dissolves. A great way for the lazy man.

Unfortunately its not enough to maintain my mostly sps system. Normally it supplements my ca reactor which is turned way down atm. Still dealing with some new tank\house\nutrient issues, which would just side track this thread, but coraline and coral growth is not up to speed yet

I use a JBJ ATO with a small pump. Think its a tunze silent one. The pump is supported about 9 inches off the bottom so it doesn't suck in the lime that hasn't dissolved yet. I just used wire ties to tie the pump/power cord and return line to a 4 ft stick. Makes it easy to take in and out

I have used this method for about 15 years. I have tried the drip systems and what not but kw tend to plug up small lines and valves. Too much work for me to clean them regularly

Thanks for the insight. I've seen the bags at Walmart, looks to be several cups in there. Are you using Magnesium on top of the calcium input, as that would really help your growth.

And I feel you on the smaller lines, as I currently use 1/4 inch line from my reactor and have to clean the tip out everyone in a while, as it gets a little clogged.

Don't dose magnesium or kalk without testing and keeping a sharp eye on your chemical parameters.

.

I am able to maintain Mg for the most part with water changes, when I do need to make adjustments, I mix the Mg in with the water I use to do the water changes so I don't screw up the SG. I do 10 percent a week.

What levels are you keeping it at to be able to keep up with water changes? What salt do you use?

My Mag slowly drops while useing kalk, so I have to add a little to keep the mag lvl's correct. I have no real colonies of Acros but have a tank stuffed with coral. Kalk keeps the dkh/ph/calc lvls good in my tank without 2 part. That and a mag supplement keep the parameters in check, but every tank is different. I just fill up a one gallon jug each morning, add a heaping teaspon full, mix it up and turn the dripper on before i head to bed. The next step is adding it to my top off some how. I would say the big thing is if you use it in an ato, like mentioned don't set the pump on the bottom in the sediment, don't have it flow to fast into your tank(more imparitive on smaller systems), and most importantly test test test to see how it is effecting your system and adjust from there. It's great stuff!! GL

so do i need to run a powerhead in the mix so it doesnt settle on the bottom of the pail?

From my surfing folks do both. Some folks run it in a reactor that either stirs it at the bottom mechanicaly, or with a pump on. And others just mix it up when they first dump the powder in and then drip/ato it to there tanks as needed. Personal preference I am guessing.

You want it to settle on the bottom after it mixes. You can mix it maybe once a day to make sure it keeps it potency, but its not required. If you don't mix it, it'll get weaker as time goes on. If you add more water to the top off, just dump it in fast so it'll kinda mix as you fill it, but let it settle before continuing the dosing.
