They are fine and happy for a while but overnight a few of our corals turned half white. .white on side where flow is on it. But they were fine for a while... anyone have any thoughts... All the other corals are fine and happy like always...

Sounds like rapid tissue necrosis-RTN. Hve you checked any or all of ypur parameters?

Ashley:

We need some more info to give any good advice on this. Can you tell us:

How old is the tank? What temperature is it during the day? How about at night?
What are your other corals?
How much and how often are your water changes on average? (be honest :) ) And what salt mix are you using?
Are you dosing anything for Calcium or alkalinity? If so how much and how often?
Are you testing Ca and alk? How often? What are your results while this is happening to your coral?
How close are the suspect corals to the flow output? What is generating the flow?

Sounds like they may be bleaching. you need to test your parameters and make sure everything is okay. Also bleaching can be caused back lack of nutrition. What kind of lighting are they under.

Definitely sounds like RTN, how long have you had the corals? There is most likely a dramatic swing in a key parameter.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience but this can be just a small problem and maybe a easy fix.
Of course dead corals are dead corals and won't come back.
SPS, don't like permanent direct flow from pumps, wave makers are good but return pump flow as this is constant is a NONO!
But than again above are a lot of questions we like to see some answers on that and send us some pics too.

Edit: I have no idea why this posted twice at completely different times, something going on with my iPhone.

Okay wow alot of questions lol

Dosing...yes two part every day..bionic

Lighting...two 15 metal halide metal hqi
Temp has been between 75 and 84 with lights on. We live by beach in fl..hot

Ora Hawkins, stevo frag, blue torc..had corals over 5 months. Alot of other frags but temp keeps going up and down past few days. .

We use reef crystals

My alk is 9 drops daily
Salt is 1.025
Water changes once a month. Run protein octopus protein skimmer all the time. Carbon reactor with gfo. Mag 7 pump in the sump for ciculation.

Tank is a 30 gallon rimless cube 24 by 24 by 12
Sump is a proflex 3
Have chaeto too.
Going to borrow a chiller from a buddy to see if it helps.

If I'm reading this right, two 250 watt halides over a 24 by 24 by 12 tank is probably one to many. Like an extra furnace running over the tank.

Pm I live on so florida also maybe if we're close I can help u ! I got a sps dominated 65gal

As others have said, temperature swings are what I would take care of first. (May not be the only issue.)

The big lights will make the tank warm up a lot over the course of the day, then the temp. plummets at night after lights out.

84° is a little high for even my tastes - try having a fan over the tank or sump come on with the lights. I also put my heaters on a timer to be off when the lights came on - saved me a degree or two. Shoot for 82° or a bit less.

Also limit the temperature drop at night by turning your heaters up to just a degree or so below the tank's maximum daytime temp.

(Switching to LED's fixed all this for my tank...something else to consider.)
