I live in the pacific northwest very near the Olympic peninsula.This may sound super strange but a coworker recently had a lab to keep a mussel alive, I'll find out the exact class and any details you need but marine biology is the major. The challenge was too keep this mussel alive as long as possible in captivity. I asked what he was doing to keep it alive and a 10g tank and powerhead was the answer. Needless to say no one was able to keep the mussel alive.
I'm an idiot but I've kept a few tanks. My suggestion was to grab one of the many rocks below our work and a bucket of that water, as we work on the water front in a building on stilts over the shore. As the tide moves out you have plenty of time to grab a rock full of live mussels. It's obvious they didn't have the biological balance neccecarry to harbor marine aquaria in a 10g petco aquarium.
So! Finally my question haha. In my experience living near the coast mussels seem to do the best in an extremely turbulent tide almost better where the waves break recess and swell back in. Aside from the obvious biological life issues I was wondering if the real solution to the problem is oxygen? Flow, turbulent swells ect.? I'm no chemist so pardon the layman's terms. No powerhead in the world that can match that kind of of water movement right? Thank you for any insight [emoji16]
