Keeping Pods Alive

You do not need any light. It could help to have some sort of light so their circadian rhythm does not get disrupted. Mature pods will run from bright light if they can and hide in rocks. Newly hatched will be attracted to light. You need good water quality and will need to feed them.

I ran mine in just 1 gal with a daylight bulb from home depot over the container. Pods dont need or like a ton of light.

Thanks for the replies. What’s your maintenance schedule to keep them going?
I have several 1 gallon containers (also 5 gallons buckets if I want to scale up). An airpump, rigid airline, Glycerin-free Nannochloropsis phytopaste and sieves from brine shrimp direct .com, and pods coming from algae barn.

How does everyone keep pods living & breeding? I have gotten them from multiple locations & have had Ulva/sea lettuce, cheato, ogo, Caulerpa, Gracilaria & phyto plankton in the refugium with a grow light that keeps it alive but I can't seem to get pods to stay alive or breed. Light bought per info I found here on the forums.
Thanks

Parameters I Do Not Dose
KH usually runs at 10+not dose for anything.
Calc usually at 4-500
MAg usually at 1400+
PH usually 7.9-8
Salinity try to keep @125.
Temp stays 73-75
Is this attracted to your sump. If it is do you feed your tank phytoplankton? If you don't this may be in part why your pods crash.

Another picture of a setup... I set mine up today actually.

I do use heaters in mine as I live in a cold climate so my basement will get really cold in the winter. I used this heater... Cheap and fits in these slim jugs nice.

Just figured I would show mine if you can get any ideas from it.

That looks great! I was thinking of a similar set up. Let me know how that works for you or if you’d change anything after having it set up for a bit!

Any updates or changes you'd make yet? My pods arrive tomorrow.

To keep pods going long term in your tank you'll want to feed the tank some foods that they can consume easily. Phytoplankton is great. Also things like reef roids or spirulina powder can help.

Nope, not yet I have been really happy with it. I will give you a tip that I was happy I did and that is on your Phytoplankton air hole make it very small so the 2nd or 3rd day after you split your culture you will want to mix it... In my case I simply give the bottle a good shake and put my finger over the small air hole.

What do you mean by phytoplankton airhole? Thanks

When you set up the tank you have to drill a hole in the top to let out the air as you will be pumping air in. If you only pump it in but dont let it out the container will pop like a balloon. So when you drill the hole to let the air escape make it small.

Oh yeah I have that, just misunderstood you. Here’s my set up so far (sorry about he poor lighting in the photo). Excited to start this process.

Added a 4th Jug for Brine Shrimp. I also split the phtyoplanton as that Jug got really dark and they needed more space. So I filled the second half up with fresh Saltwater.
