Kent Marine Parts A/B

Good afternoon R2R Community.

My 3 month old nano reef is doing well so far...had a little cyano algae bloom but I think I have that under control now (knock on wood) My question today is about a product called Kent Marine Parts A/B. I'm wondering the following; when, if at all I would ever need to use it and also if any of you have used it to any success. Mainly, if my tank seems to be doing well and fish and corals are doing well is there any need to use this product or a similar product?

Before you dose anything I'd suggest you test. The animals won't usually show stress until you're at a critical point.

Kent part 1 and 2 are a balanced two part for calcium and alkalinity. I've used them with success in the past but only after I had a good idea about my tanks consumption.

Grab your test kits and perform the big three

Magnesium
Alkalinity
Calcium

Oops almost forgot. Please post your results so that we can assist if need be.

Common values for reef aquaria are

Magnesium 1290-1350
Calcium 400-450
Alkalinity 7-10dkh depending on nutrient levels

Thanks, I don't currently have a test kit for Magnesium and Alkalinity, my calcium has been 420-460 ppm regularly, I did a KH test tonight and that was 107.4 ppm. I'll get to the LFS tomorrow and purchase those test kits so I can run the numbers. Thanks for your help!

Ok, kH is alkalinity. Multiply that number by .056 and you'll get your dKh.

I'm getting 6.014 in alkalinity after the math.

Oh, that's good to know, I get that # as well. I'll post magnesium results tomorrow.

with an alkalinity of 6 ish and calcium around 440, I would recommend slowly raising your alkalinity up. One of our members just wrote a good article about dosing alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium. Here's a link for it https://www.reef2reef.com/ams/how-much-two-part-do-i-need.187/

I was going to suggest raising the alkalinity, but I'd rather have the magnesium level first before I went further.

Totally agree. Been there done that. Had low levels all around when I first got my test kits. I would check alk and calc till the end of days. Once I realized magnesum was the limiting factor, my other 2 balanced themselves.

So my Magnesium test came in at 1480 ppm. I did a water change this morning about 2 hours before I ran the test.

It's taken me 2 years to finally understand chemistry and nutrients and their relationship. Keep reading, this all gets easier with time. I remember when starting to research how to keep a reef... I started with tap water and reef crystals.

The chicken is really what drew me in. Buttermilk battered fried chicken is best when seasoned with reef crystals. funny story @jsker actually uses his old reef crystals and kalkwasser to cook with! He could explain more but I thought that was very resourceful of him.

Reef Crystals for curing meats(pastrami, bacon, corn beef etc) I found I like using it better than regular salt, and Kalkwasser for my corn tortillas, make them lighter. Limewater is used in production of corn tortillas
