So tonight i bought my rodi system used off CL. I downloaded the manual and it has pics ( not great ones) on how the tubing should be plumbed. The things i need are the the filters. I have the sediment filter. Also need the fitting to connect the garden hose to the unit. He had this block i have in the pic connected to the fatter part of the membrane housing. My only thought is it is to connect a pressure gauge.. Am i correct. Any one that has this system are you able to see if I have the tubes correct. If need be ill take more pics.
The last pic is how it was plumbed when i got it

Jeff - That little box that you've removed is an auto shut off valve. If/when it works correctly, it will stop the flow of waste water when you otherwise stop to flow of purified water (with a float valve for instance). Looks like you have an old rubber gasket stuck in the bottom of the DI housing - you'll want to get that out of there and throw it out. What is the micron rating on that sediment filter you have? Are you on city water or well water? If city water, do you have chloramines?Russ

Russ,
On the canister with from the front view with the blue tube i have a white gasket and on the yellow it has a black gasket at the bottom. Get rid of those? Will the new filters come with their own gasket? On that whit block there is no writing, no in out or manufacturer. In on city water. I live in chittenango NY and i think we get water from onedoga lake. I hear its a gross lake. I am calling the water comp today as i want a breakdown of metals and particles in the water. Here is a pic of the filter. It is a ametek resin bonded cellulose sediment filter w a micron rating of 1. What 2 other filters should i be looking at putting in? Thanks

Oh and Russ. Thanks for the labeling , def helps me to know where the cartridges of each type go. Does it look plumbed correctly?

Correction. Looks like it comes from lake Ontario. Still trying to find a breakdown of contaminants

OK so here is what i have so far as of 2011 and 12
-Lead 1.8 ug/l
-Copper .1 mg/l
Turbidity .06 NTU (nephelometric turbidity units)
-Total coliform bact. - Highest Aug 2012 .56%
-Chlorine residual - .52 mg/l
-Barium sample 7/12- .024 mg/ l
-Calcium sample 7/12- 33.4 mg/l
-Chloride sample 7/12- 30.8 mg/l
-DOC Feb, may, June,Aug, Nov 2012 - 2mg/l
-Total organic compounds same months as above 1.9 mg/l
Gross beta- 3.96 pCi/l
Radium 226 -.303 pCi/l
Radium 228- .968 pCi/l
Total uranium - .379 ug/l

OK now deep breath. Whew.... Don't know if you need all that... But here is where i got it from. Http://WWW.ocwa.org/2012-water-quality-report/

Looks like it is plumbed correctly. That sediment filter, although as old as the hills, is OK as long as your water is chlorinated. Next time get a poly sediment filter instead of a cellulose one.To match up to that one you want a 1 mic or 0.5 micron carbon block, and a 10" x 2.5" refillable DI cartridge. Everything on your system takes standard-sized filters.

I got that sediment filter from the person i got it from. Is the to membrane the one in the horizontal white tube?

Yes - the RO membrane is in the white horizontal tube. If the membrane is in there, but the system has been unused for a period of time, you'll need a new one. You can get what ever capacity you'd like between 24 and 150 gpd, and you'll also need a matched flow restrictor.Russ

Pulled the membrane out. Had water in it and wrote the guy to see when last used. I have a TDs meter not for the aquarium but for my drinking water filter. Can i use that to see it water is OK? Here is a pic of membrane and tds. Part # is ag20127jg

Oh in assuming to stay w the 24 gpd. Ill use it to start the tank and to do top offs and PWC. I can have this run a few days before hand and add when needed.this is my first rodi so in assuming that will work, correct?

If the membrane has been unused for more than several weeks I'd punt it. If I were you I'd go for a 75 gpd membrane - price difference is minimal. I don't think that TDS meter has automatic temperature conpensation. It is a chinese knock off of an HM Digital meter. Not sure how it will perform down near 0 ppm.

You are getting good advice from Russ at www.buckeyefieldsupply.com . Why would you suggest replacements from other vendors when he has been nice enough to take time out of his busy day and help you free of charge? You will not find any better components, price or technical support from any of the others you are throwing out there. I believe you will find when you add up the cost of a RO membrane, flow restrictor, sediment and carbon block replacements, a refillable DI cartridge filled with 20 oz of high quality fresh mixed bed nuclear or semiconductor grade DI resin, an inline pressure gauge, a better temperature compensated TDS meter and an autoshutoff valve you will have much more invested than just buying a new reef quality RO/DI preassembled and with a manufacturers warranty. Russ has an excellent system with his 75GPD BFS-161 at only $169 complete.

Used systems rarely work out well and usually end up costing more than a new system. There is almost always a reason someone is selling the system and unless you know its exact history I would not suggest buying used.
