They both boost alkalinity, but the alkalinity part of a well-designed two part has some other features that a simple buffer (like baking soda, or the Pro Buffer).
It has other ions in it so that when matched with the other part, it doesn't mess with the relative concentrations of ions such as sodium, chloride, sulfate, potassium, magnesium, etc. Using just the buffer will alter the relative ratios of these.
Also, the two parts of the two part are designed for equal parts dosing, a benefit you loose switching to a simple buffer.
You can make a DIY two part, if cost is the issue.
