Did u adjust for t5 par with the kessils or just let it rip?



Did u adjust ur Kessil’s to accommodate the increased par the t5s put out?

No, I kept the Kessil’s the same, just added T5’s. At the time I was using 3 160’s at 70% intensity on my 12hr schedule and added the T5’s starting them for 4hrs during peak hours. I then added 15 minutes each week until I hit 6hrs to match the Kessil’s peak hours. All of this was over my 22g.

I had the ATI fixture sitting on an AI light rack, it was a crazy setup, but I didn’t have a choice. The corals were so packed in I needed to punch through it all. You can see the reflection of the 3 Kessil’s. I lifted the ATI fixture to take this pic, which was the last picture before I moved everything out of this tank.

I have an IM 40. 24 L x 19 H x 20 W. I use ATI Blue plus BUT I only run 2 bulbs and unhooked the 2 bulbs on the end. It could just be a glitch that ur seeing on the controller and the ramping times could b right in reality. The thing about lighting IMO (and this is solely based on the type of corals u want/have) is that reefers get wrapped up in how much power/par these lights put out when in reality corals don't need to b beat to hell with light! Again, this is just my opinion. Give them some good quality light and let them figure it out. My torches HATED 200+ par but yet the vendors that I got them from kept them at 300! Sooooo many other factors involved though.

maybe its a glitch...weird that nobody else has seen this issue though.

Really is no need for the 8:30 spot but looks good. Violets are 100% are a must. Color is a personal preference.

Yep i have 100 violet all around except at start and end points. The 830 point is there so I have the full blue a little longer till color goes to 20. Does the spectrum/intensity/photoperiod look good though?

I just start and finish my schedule with a 5 minute lead in/out. So if you look at my schedule, it starts at 7:55 and ends at 20:05, this gives me 12hrs of lighting, the points in between are for transitions and peak times (which I have a few points to increase intensity in smaller increments). I've been using this schedule pretty much since 2015. I agree, violet is the hidden gem that needs to be utilized, but go slow if you're coming from lights that didn't use violets before. My general rule with increasing intensity and/or violets is 2-5% a week, then wait a week and go from there. Your corals will tell you if you've gone too far. Color and intensity is based on preference and the animals you're keeping. I will say that if you're looking to get more punch (par/micro moles), then stick to 20-40% color range. Once you go above 50% I found that the par value goes down slightly. Where you make up this par is unlocking the violet channel.

Also I like the bluer look so as of now color doesn't even go above 20.

I'm prob just going to use the acclimation mode for two weeks and then after thats up start turning the t5s on. Just don't want to cause a sudden algae bloom to occur..

How old is the tank? Are you using dry rock, cured cycled rock? I wouldn't turn the lights on until you have to and be prepared to add CUC as soon as you turn on the lights. Forgive me, but what is your experience keeping reef tanks? Understanding what happens in a new tank goes a long way with not having a bad start and dealing with unnecessary issues.

Forgive me, but what is your experience keeping reef tanks? Understanding what happens in a new tank goes a long way with not having a bad start and dealing with unnecessary issues.

Tank has been setup since around August. Added the first fish late September. It was setup using dry rock/live sand and I dumped a bottle of Biospira. Also added some live rock from my LFS. I've been in the hobby for around two years now

Do you know if the live rock was ocean rock or just cured dry rock from the LFS?

I believe it was just cured dry rock. Majority is dry rock though.

Then I would take it slow and barely turn on the lights. Unless that dry rock was cured/cycled with actual mature live rock or ocean rock, I wouldn't call it cured/cycled. It takes a long time for dry rock to be colonized with enough beneficial bacteria before I would call it live rock. But that's a different discussion altogether.

Yep. That's why I was keeping the lights off until now.

There is definitely something to that 4 month no light period. I know it's debatable but I won't do it any other way.
