Hi BRS. Confused. Kessil H80 or H380 for a refugium? One costs a $129 and the other $299 yet the description for both says it is great for a refugium. Can you please provide me a comparison? Thank you.

BRS TV Investigates has a 3 part series on this exact test. Great watch over on YouTube if you have the time.
 
What is the area and depth of your fuge? Just compare the fuge lights to their reef light cousins. The Kessil a80 is essentially a 15 watt nano light with a 12" coverage diameter and the a360 is the full sized 90 watt reef light with a 24" coverage diameter (probably being generous with these numbers). Obviously, at 90 watts, the 360 has superior depth penetration over the 15 watt 80. So I'd run the H series with the same considerations and size constraints.
 
I just got the tank. Haven't filled it yet. It's the Red Sea Reefer 750 XXL. 8.3”-10.6″ is what their website says.
 
Nice tank!!! :D Others may disagree, but at that long, narrow and relatively shallow dimension, I think you'd be better served with 2 h80s cranked up to max intensity.

If you notice the growth comparisons of the different fuge lights, they were all put over a 20"ish cube tank. The obvious winner of that light comparison was the H380 because that light happened to be the perfect light for those particular dimensions.
 
Thanks for the suggestion. Now I need to find a way to mount it. Buy the Gooseneck or do something else.
 
Also, maybe overkill, but if your budget can handle it, perhaps even three a80s would even be better cover that 28" span or perhaps 1 H380 angled in such a way to shoot the beam of light across the the 28" span.

Sorry, just thinking out loud... :D
 
I'm thinking of buying just one H380 and setting it up angled.
 
Yeah, the more I think about your dimensions, the more I like the single H380 on a shallow angle idea. Right under the light where the beam won't cover, you could put a chunk of Pukani rock for a pod breeding hang out!
 
I have the 380 over my small 'frug (Eshopps R-200 sump) and the light beam is VERY strong/hot and will burn the tips of the plants if the light is too close to the water surface. If you don't have the height to keep the 380 about 12" above water level I would go with 2 or 3 80's instead. But if you do the H380 works great at growing stuff.
 
The tank stand has a height of 24". Refugium area is 28" L x 17" H x 9" W. The water level will be between 8.3”-10.6″.

Plan is to mount it using the Kessil A-Series Gooseneck on one end of the sump and have it angled.

Not sure what the height will be at that time from the water level.

Great conversation here guys! As a point of reference our BRS160 Fuge (before we expanded it) was 10"L x 23.5"W x 15" T (water line) and the single H380 was more than enough for a thick and happy fuge! Honestly, with the new size fuge we could easily use two H380s and have more than enough light, but Ryan loves new gear and had to put the H1200 on there! :p

I would say that you are pretty close to our size of fuge and I wouldn't doubt that a single H380 is going to give you ample spread and PAR/PUR for your tank!

I can't comment on the h380 but for me, the h80 was barely able to keep cheato alive. This was in a fuge area that is 12x10 and 7 inches deep.

I switched to one and then two of these and I know discard two gallons worth of cheato every two weeks.

I'd love to see BRS stock these or some of the more common grow lights from the horticultural world. I'd also love to see them in the BRS investigates series. These grow lights get lots of love on horticulture forums, the h380 not so much.
