I have a Kessil 360we over my nuvo 16 (2ftx1ftx1ft), and the light is 2ft from the sand bed.
I have been using it since October 2014, and I have yet to figure this light out. My confusion comes to the intensity, and where it should be. So here is a timeline, and things I've noticed. I also work at a LFS that has 6 kessils over various tanks(all 360we's)
-I started the light without a controller, keeping it 100% intensity, and 10-20% color for a few months.
Things grew great, I had great color, everything was awesome.
-Got the controller around January, set a 10hr program with ramping up to 100% intensity for a few hours, light % tops out at 40%. Still, everything did good.
-Few months went by, and in April/May, I began getting thoughts that my light was on too much intensity, and I see people using kessil 360we's on bigger tanks than mine, with lower intensity, growing everything.
-I back the lighting down to top out at 60% intensity and 35% color, and began to let it sit for a couple months.
As the months went on, I noticed some of my chalices stopped growing lost some color, and began to slooooooowly recede around the edges towards the center. All parameters are fine at this point. The tank is 60% acans, 20% blastos, 20% chalices. The chalices were the only ones looking bad, but I had a Miami hurricane chalice that wont stop growing, its the healthiest one, growing at the same rate when the intensity was 100% vs 60%. I also notice that I have some palys at the sand bed, and their stalks are almost 1.5inches(reaching for more light?)
--So at my store, we have experimenting with kessils, and we keep some corals within 1ft of the light, with the intensity being 90-100%, and color being 0-25%, and everything looks great. Chalices grow and keep their color, palys dont get long stalks, nothing recedes or shows signs of being burned.
So my question is, what the heck is the deal with these lights?! what should I run them at? Should I go back to the nearly 100% intensity when everything was fine? or keep it maxed out at 60% intensity? (Keep in mind, the only things that acted negatively to the reduction in light were the 2 chalices and a few monti caps)
I've read probably over 30-40 threads about kessils, looked at people's programs, and even called Kessil to get their thoughts. When I told the guy at Kessil what I was doing, he acted like I was crazy, so that was a pretty big factor in deciding to bring it down.
Please let me know your thoughts, I'd appreciate feed back.
I'm not sure if I want to leave the intensity where it is, or go back to the nearly 100%. Nothing is showing signs of too much light right now. I had a small green monti cap frag healthy for a couple weeks, then over the past 7 days it slowly started bleaching and losing the green color, not much green left to it. All my acans on the sand bed are great, extending out towards the light, along with the blastos. Only have 2 paly frags, and their stalks have been getting longer and longer.
