Do you mean like the screw/clamp arrangement on a gooseneck? If so, not a problem.

If the clamp base is in the water the black paint will degrade over time exposing bare metal. How do I know this? I've experienced it first hand. I raised the clamp above the water line which solved the issue.

I agree with @Scorpius About the paint coming of in time; but may I assume it is a type of metal not prone to rusting? Otherwise that would be an obvious design flaw— since the bottom of the clamps often rest in saltwater (no surprise there).

Yep. I’m sure that’s how it is designed. In other words, there is no way the product left the Kessil factory and the engineers didn’t know it would be touching the water in a significant amount of people’s tanks… At least that is my thought. I had the gooseneck looking just like that for probably a year, and it didn’t rust. Anodized metal?? I’m no metal expert, but...? At least if it ever does begin to rust it is in a place where you would see/know it, and by that time you could replace the gooseneck. Best wishes.

I would just cover the bottom with a light layer of aquarium safe silicone. But like @JumboShrimp said I’m sure the quality of metal it is won’t rust

The problem is I dont have much room left to raise it

In some tank set-ups, the rim becomes an interfering factor; also if you raise the clamp, the main portion might no longer be sitting in the tank— And that is what gives it the most ability. That’s why I wouldn’t worry about rust unless I saw it happen.
