Kh buffer delayed reaction

Guys,

I might have figured out why my kh went from 9.3 to 10 after a water change
Obviously I tested the kh of the nsw and added kh to match my 9.3
BUT having raised the amount needed for 10kh and testing straight after it was just 9

So, I’m wondering does the addition have a slower impact rather than instant

What are you using to raise alkalinity? Sodium Bicarb, and carbonate and hydroxides are instant, well, as soon as it's dissolved or mixed in.

No. Any alkalinity addition is fully detectable as soon as it is added and mixes into the water tested.

The only caveat to that is that some all in one supplements do not literally contain alkalinity, but contain an organic molecule that must be metabolized by bacteria before the alkalinity arises. Tropic marine All FOr Reef and Salifert All In One are among these.

In that case it must have been the ph drop to cause the rise last week

If your tanks pH was lower/higher than your mix then alkalinity might change after being combined even if they are the same in the tank and mix beforehand. Honestly a bunch of things change alkalinity; temperature, molecular activity, calcium and or magnesium levels. It also fluctuates through the day based on consumption.

I’ll check it again when the temps the same , ph also

ph of nsw with kh to 10 is 8.7
I’m doing a 20% wc so that’ll bump it from 8.33 to 8.4
I don’t think this’ll be an issue

I wonder if it’s all the shaking that’s rising the ph
