If my Mg is 1450, Ca is 480 to 500, why is my Alk reading 3.1, 8.7?

Well what do you mean is it 3.1 meq/l 8.9dkh or is it fluctuating from 3.1 dkh to 8.9 dkh?

How frequently do you do water changes and how much?
What are you doing as far as dosing.....two part, calc reactor, kalkwasser?

What Alkalinity level are you trying to get? What's wrong with 8.7? I'd think about lowering the calcium. I suppose you have seen these two articles? http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2002/11/chemistry

This is interesting. How close to the parameters do you have to be?

A problem a lot of people have is chasing parameters or dosing additives that are really not needed. I would refer to the article by Randy Holmes-Farley and if you're in the red box leave well enough alone. Being consistent is the most important thing.
