Hi I know this thread is a little old but since KHG is really basically going to be discontinued, would like to see if there was a final consensus on how to DIY our own reagent. I have Hydrochloric Acid 31%, do we know the exact amount to mix with 1500g of distilled H20? Thanks!

I have had my KHG since 2017 and am a big fan, but this leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Yes it does but it also tells you how much you are off in your mixture as they added a feature that tells you if your reagent needs more water or acid. I have two units going on many years now. I upgraded a few things here an there but it is a great product for the technical minded.

how would it know if you are using diy or the real deal. You fill a jug up and put the pickup tube in it. All that it does is counts the drops and measures ph. I have been using diy for probably over a year. I haven’t upgraded the firmware since I installed the new little board onto the main board though . If you have your diy mixture set right I don’t know how it would possibly know.

According to the link, an optical sensor measuring luminosity. So apparently they are adding a indicator dye to their reagent I guess?

That's just nuts. "for security reasons" what in the world Acid standard solutions are widely available in the world and don't need a markup by aquarium suppliers.

My unit is probably 4-5 years old and ive installed all the upgrades possible. The only sensor on mine counts the drips. I add 6.5 ml of acid to 1500 ml and it is within .2 of my Hanna. I have two different hannas and get that much difference between them alone. I love my guardian and wouldn’t get rid of it for nothing.

I continue to make my own. I recently bought a new gallon of Muratic that must have been stronger ,I had to reduce my mix ratio down to 4ml of acid to get it to test right. I’m putting together another system and would like to purchase another guardian. I really like this product.

Muriatic acid is somewhat variable in concentration, which would lead to somewhat variable results.

Why not just use a standard 0.1N or even 1N acid?

They're not expensive and at least you have a known starting point before dilution.

Also, no unknown impurities if you plan to pump the sample back into the tank.

How do you know the test results are accurate when you start with an unknown?

Just buy a 0.1N HCl from ebay.
