Well, my female mandarin died today. I have had it for six years, and it has always looked fat, like permanent pregnant fat. But, in the last months the belly have been bigger and uneven on one side. I disected it and found two stones, one about 5 mm and one about 3 mm, both black and shiny like pearls. There where also some tiny black dots here and there ammong all the eaten copepods. The disection was ruough, i just wanted to check if the fish had a huge parasite or something growing inside it before I flushed it. the fish is flushed, I have the stones, but unfortunately I do not have a camera that can take a decent photo of something that small. Why do mandarin fish get kidney stone? Do I have something in the tank it should not eat? Do I risk that more fish might have kidney stones? How do I treat kidney stone in reef fish? I can not find anything relevant about fish having kidney stone using google, so all information would help.

Welcome to R2R! Sorry for your loss. Darned little out there on the net or in books on kidney stones in fish. There is a study that was looking at the connection between blindness and kidney stones in clownfish. Not much help for you though.
The only way to know for sure if those are kidney stones would be to send them to a lab for analysis.

Welcome home, you will love it here.

Sorry for the loss, I agree with @Big G

Any biologist that want the two synchiropus splendidus kidney stones? Let me know, and I will mail them.

Quit big stones for a fish only 5cm long. Apparently stones this size can kill a grown man.
