Well to add to all the other issues I've been battling lately why not a few more............**** timer broke BRS dosing pump cranked out the alk for 4.5 hours.

Got home from work....tested the tank alk 16,5+ and ph at 9.5. Luckly the tank isn't showing any signs of its near demise..........how long do I have??? What should I do?

Getting ready for a 20-30 gallon water change as we speak.

You think 20 tonight, 20 tomorrow.....or large volume change once and repeat tomorrow.......I don't know what to do *reaches for xanex, vodka, and hammer*

change 20 gal and re-test before going to such drastic measures.... i know it spiked up fast but dropping it low real fast is just as bad....it's a 60 gal cube correct???

Yes, thinking of 15 gallon change tonight and one in the morning or afternoon when my daughter takes a nap?

also buy an aerator. as you know co2 becomes carbonic acid, which lowers alkalinity, which lowers pH. good luck.

Not trying to be difficult ... but this is not entirely true. It is true that carbon dioxide lowers pH, but this only the shifts the form carbonate. If you are/g in the mood to dork out you can wiki the henersen haselbach equation.

To the OP: I would do at least 20 xanax. Seriously, I would do massive water changes. Just me but I would do 100% change ... maybe 25% at a time.

You seem so calm and collected......am I over reacting to 16.5 alk and 9.something pH?? My BRS doser was on almost 5 hours????!!!!!

Rob, I ran my alk at 14 before with no ill effects. I would just do the 25% or so water changes until it comes back down. If they survive the first shock of the quickly rising parameters, you don't want to push it and bring them back down just as quickly as they rose. JMO

Happened a few times on our local club... don't freak. Do a few smaller water changes and you will be fine. IIRC everyone recovered from their alk dumps with little to no losses.
