Killer Hydnaphora

I would like to share a word of caution about Hydnaphora. I woke up this morning to the colony I have laying on top of my Pectina and Gorgonian. The pectina is almost completely dead and the gorgonian has lost it's tissue on one whole side. I was warned a few months ago they they are very aggressive. I placed it at the top of the tank, thinking it was attached securely. Be very careful where you place the hydnaphora by being sure there is nothing underneath it that pieces can call onto. It will KILL it, and with a quickness. Would an iodine dip help the Pectina?

Yep very toxic like many LPS. They will kill anything they touch.

Hydnophora is sps.

Hynophora is a strong stinging coral that why you should make sure it is epoxy. To a rock as with any coral I have a peace that has been incrusting a rock for about 4 years the corals is about 14"x8" and has never bothered any Corals around him truly a beautiful Coral!

My hydno has taken out a few corals or coral heads... It is a beauty but can be dangerous as well. This reminds me that I need to find mine's permanent home in the tank.

Rev, No, I haven't seen a blue one. I bet that is stunning.

I had it epoxied, but I guess a fished knocked it down. I have relocated it to a corner with nothing underneath it. It's in time out! lol.

Hydnophora is sps, and is one of the few corals that is listed as aggressive and it will kill any sessile inverts that threaten its space. Unfortunately iodine dip probably won't help your pectina, however pectinas are very resilient and if any eyes are left it might recover, also pectina will easily regrow over the skeleton so you don't have to cut it up.

SPS, LPS...these terms are only used amongst hobbyists and have no scientific definition from what i know so trying to classify some species that have attributes of both and than arguing about it is useless.

hydrophora is mean!! my blue one took out lots of corals except my pavona cactus it wiped out the hydrophora, pavona is probably the meanest coral around except maybe fire coral

Thanks bct. I didn't dip it. It is already making a comeback...whew! It was very healthy prior to the attack, so I'm sure that has a lot to do with its recovery. The gorgonian is also doing fine. I just cut the bare stalks away from it.
