Killer Laser

If you're not convinced a laser "works" to kill pests take a look at this. You could light the wall on fire. First image the thermocouple is at ambient conditions, second image the laser has been focused on the thermocouple for five seconds. Don't forget your PPE - I'm wearing welding glasses.



So far I've killed aipstia, vermetids, and cyano.

I didn't see any gassing. No negative effects on even my most sensitive corals.

I'll have to wait for another pest to pop up. There are some videos out there showing what happens to aiptasia when you hit it with a good laser. Same thing happened here. I'll snag a video next chance I get.

My concern with this is the heat effect on the tank glass.... is there none??

Yep they work good if you can see the pest you can fry him, I have the same one

I didn't notice heat on the glass. I tried on my 1/4" thick QT and 3/4" DT. I wouldn't recommend blasting through acrylic though.

Have you tried to kill Xenias or diacosomas with it? I have some growing at unwanted places...

This is epic! There is another post confirming this only using a 3000mW. Ordering one today! Blasting vermetids, zoanthids and valonia algae! He!! Yes!

I have used mine on zoos so yeah it will work

I hate to rain on your parade, but a laser is barely any better, if even as good as, any other form of removal or killing of unwanted 'stuff'. I've had 2 different lasers, a 2 watt and a 3 watt. And yes, I could start a fire on a 2x4 with the laser, no problem. A 5 watt may work a little better, but the power isn't the real issue.

I got them to use on aiptasia. It does work... sometimes. The problem is, if the aiptasia (or any other polyp) is in a hole, you need to get the laser beam to go directly in the hole all the way to the bottom. Otherwise the aiptasia just grows back in 3 to 10 days. And from outside the tank, I'd say about 50% to 70% of aiptasia are anchored where you can't get at the entire animal (inside the hole).

The short version is, fun to play with, but not really a solution. If you go to Reef Central and look, I started the first laser thread over there 4 or 5 years ago and I was just as enthusiastic as you are here. But in time, I learned that it just isn't all you think it will be.

Agree, but with a 3 watt. I used it in my tank with much success, the aiptasia would bubble, shrivel, recede and never recover.

Yeah it's kind of a game if you hat a lot of aiptasia i think it would be impossible. For 1 you got to recharge the battery often. But they are great to get rid of a few pests

Yeah it will but might take a while going polyp to polyp. I haven't tried so I don't know how effective it would be against these guys.
