A few weeks ago I lost my fairly old sea hare when it entered my tunze 3 and exposed its skeletal plate. Today I looked up just in time to see 5 arms from a sand sifting starfish flying across the water column. It did not grind it up much. It just seperated it into five large pieces. I'll go pick them out now and reduce the power a bit. Its a cuisinart in the tank.

These guys are going in through the front opening where water is rushing out? Maybe try fitting a strainer over the outlet.

No, squeezing through the side. Maybe a zip tie around the nozzle to shorten the slots. Poor sea hare. My mother-in-law loved it like a pet.

Consider a very open filter media wrapped around the intake slots.

Some type of cover as suggested. If you go with sponge I would recommend having 2 so you can swap them. Sponges plug very fast when used on power heads.
Also do you have the pump mounted low in the tank? If so maybe raise it a little so it isn't so accessible to the inhabitants.
