Has anyone tried taking aiptasia covered rocks out of the aquarium and letting them dry out. Will that kill the aiptasia?

Yes but not in a day or 2. It takes several days to actually dry aiptasia out. They live deep in curves and crevices so water don't dry out as quickly as the rock itself.
I usually pull the rock out and using a torch lighter burn deep into the hole it's at and rinse the rock. Never had one come back.

Kill it with FIRE! That seems like a very satisfying way to kill aptasia... a bit overkill but I like it.
