I have a mixed tank and some of my zoa beds have gotten out of control... in a couple particular spots they have completely surrounded the base of a few of my sps corals killing the encrusted side of the coral... my question is can I place kalk paste on the zoas without killing the entire sps colony?... and for those who have done this what is the best way to mix/apply?

i had the same problem. i mixed up the kalk with rodi water. the consistancy was like a runny paste that could be sucked up with a syringe with needle removed. next suck up the mixture into a 5cc syringe. use the syringe and apply in the zoas you want removed. they will start to disolve. next flush the area so other near by corals wont be affected.

Turn the flow off and put the kalk on the head in the mouth.

I had to mix the paste a couple times. Not too thick not too thin.

Thin goes every where , thick won't come out or all at once cuz ya have to force it. I practiced in the sink.

Watch out, they can release minute amounts of toxin when they die, may I suggest a zoa eating nudibranch? How about some coral eating butterfly fish? No just kidding! :) be careful though

I actually considered the nudis... but from what I've read online they don't touch pallys...

FWIW Fragging can be done rather easy using a flat head screw driver or many other low tech ways in tank.

Of course if they are non desirable Kalk paste has worked for me with an aptasia and all the zoas near it.

Please heed the experience and warnings of the reefers above. In addition run extra carbon, skimmer on and get long gloves incase they have pally toxin.
