If I fill the tank all the way up a water will that affect my corals when I eventually get some down the line because my light has to sit right on top there's nowhere for me to hang it nor do I have anything to create a folder

I spent most of my first 4 years of life in Fort Wayne, but born in Columbus IN then family moved out to Seattle in '64 for my dad to work at Boeing. Anyhow, Daicean keep up the good work and learn learn learn do not be afraid to ask any questions that you may have as there is rarely dumb questions..... just some answers... lol

Let's see if another member close by can help you out with fabricating something to lift the light a bit. It will really only require a small piece of would spanning the tank at either end with some kind of block/tab at each end to keep it in place. If you were closer could just make it out of scrap acrylic for you in short order.

I'm late to the thread, but I'll follow and help if I can. It will take 6 to 8 weeks for the processes of mineralization and nitrification to become established. There is what is called the 90 day rule. You should wait 90 to 180 days for micro- and macro fauna to develop without the addition of fish, coral, or light., as they help with the natural balance of the aquarium. My last tank was fishless for 6 months (lights for 6 hours 3 of those months) in order to get a good growth of algae and a sustainable population of copepods. Also I didn't add algae or copepod eating fish for one year. Some aquarists in Germany recommend a year for a good self-sustaining copepod population. Allowing these organisms to proper will also help with nutrient control.

I know it sounds terrible, but the 90 day rule is very good advise.

I was under the impression you had bought dry live rock.

Using the dry live rock from an old tank(that didn't have phosphate issues before) shouldn't be an issue! This is good news.

Will still tag along and help where I can.

IMO you're just wasting your test kit. Test ammonia and when it goes to zero test the others. We'll talk about "ghost feeding" later.

I know you're chomping at the bit, but you have weeks to wait. Just for fun check your ammonia every day. When it gets to zero test your nitrites and when they get to zero test everything and do an appropriate water change to lower your nitrates. Then you can add some more food and test to see that your bacteria is processing the mineralization of ammonia properly. Have you read up on the nitrification process?
