Kmore1219's super cheap extremely DIY frag tank

Took some live rock out of my main tank, stole some water from it too, now this baby is operational. Tomorrow my light comes in but I will have to wait until I get a couple more bucks to get the right bulbs for it. I can feel the impatience hitting me. IMG_9774.JPG

Oh great! I am curious to know how well these SunSun JVP-110s work. I want to add a couple to my frag tank!

I'd be careful of those sun sun, jvp type of cheap powerheads, they notoriously don't last long and some brand new ones are built so badly you will get shocked. Be sure you have a gfci!!

Used a similar container as sump for the first year of my tank. A way to avoid bowing would be to build a wood frame around it. But since you already have water in it it may be a bit late for suggestions. Also if you don't have the material available it will add a bit to the build cost.

Now that is an extremely good idea and will work perfectly since I have a bunch of extra wood from a previous project. Good thing I've got an extra container to use to measure!

This is a great idea but what happened to the 10g tank as a frag tank. Maybe turn the 10g into a qt tank

I definitely initially planned on using the 10g as the frag tank but I had to use it to qt a fish I got so decided to have some DIY fun instead. Also I like the shallowness of the buckets for frags.

Following with interest! May try it if I can get some cheap frags.

Update of the day, My lights that I have so eagerly been waiting all day for did not come in, but this little bad boy did! IMG_9778.JPG I got it for a charity hike that I will be going on in a month and wanted to take some awesome videos. Bonus is that this version of go pro is already waterproof and I'm currently trying to talk myself out of testing that out in my display tank. :D

So today the light fixture finally came in which means last thing to do was to hang the light.
IMG_9783.JPG Like I previously mentioned I stole a shelf from our laundry room to use to hang the light and man did that work out perfectly! I was a bit worried about how hot the light would get and then how much heat it would be giving off in my room but luckily I have some strong A/C and fans going on in here all the time there are no heat worries. Final step is to do a water change and put my first coral in! IMG_9784.JPG IMG_9785.JPG

Update? How's the experiment?
So it actually worked out amazing, frags grew like crazy. Only downfall was I went away for a week and was supposed to have a friend maintain the tank while I was gone. Safe to say they didn't do that at all and I lost everything.

No way!! Sorry to hear that

That is the downfall to this hobby. Hard to keep it going if you travel, especially if you are the only one in the house who is in to it. Sorry to hear

Debating whether or not to go for a round 2 of this. I enjoyed having my own frag tank so much and now that my garage is completely empty it seems like I’ve got the perfect location too.
