It's funny we always rush to the forums when a problem arises but today I'd like to give some positive or informative insight.
My tank is very young at only 8 months. I didn't rush things and waited each step to add livestock. For the last 3 months my tank seemed like it was at a stand still. I mean everything for the most part was alive but growth was undetectable other than the fish of course.
Everyone has there parameters posted and we try to match what works for others or come close to it. What we all need to remember (newbies like myself) is that each tank is different. Each species is different. What works for one tank isn't the "be all" for everyone. I started doing some small changes and kick myself for not slowing it down because now I have no idea which change was beneficial.
I have had the cyano for at least 3 months and the only steps I took to try and rid it was weekly WC with vacuuming the nasty stuff out. I started some phosphate removal with an additive to my filter.
I was keeping my tank at 78 forever and decided to bump it up to 80. I started keeping a log with my parameters, dosing etc.... I switched from Red Sea Salt to Red Sea Pro. For the past week I have seen no drop in CA or Alk, my PO4 and No3 are stable. For the first time in months I see visible growth in almost all of my corals.
It's a good feeling to see the hard work paying off. It is communities like this that open a world of new experiences that just weren't available 20-30 years ago. The veterans on this forum started there reef when all of this information was non existent or in a book somewhere in a library that was inaccessible. So I want to personally thank everyone here for sharing there experiences and knowledge.
I only hope to be able to offer some useful info as my reef matures.
