I have kept a 100 gallon saltwater aquarium for a number of years now but mostly with smaller fish that seem quite hardy. Recently I added a Koran Angel perhaps 3 months ago, about 4-5 inches (still in the juvenile stage). Over the past few weeks she's started forming these small pits and scaring on her face. I have pictures but I can't figure out how to load anything but a URL. I do not have a hospital tank running. Any ideas what this is and how to treat? The tank has a built in System 2 I believe it's called with the bioballs built into the back of the tank. Also running a 25 Watt Classic UV Sterilizer. Not sure I will see your responses. Thanks guys!

Koran Angels are very prone to HLLE. It's almost always due to diet/water conditions. Make sure you are feeding him the highest quality frozen foods. Mix it up a lot and he would even enjoy some nori thrown in. Adding vitamins to all his food (and the other fish's food too) is ALWAYS a good idea.

Thanks Meredith. I totally missed your response. Didn't even realize I had posted this. Thought it went into drafts or something.

Any recommendations on vitamins to add to the food?

Zoecon. It's made specifically for HLLE. That and dark purple or the darkest nori you can get the fish to eat.

Head & Lateral Line Erosion "HLLE":

Symptoms - HLLE literally looks as though the skin is rotting or peeling off the fish. Affected areas usually include the face and lateral line, and may be white in color.

Treatment options - This is more of a condition than an actual disease. Since no one can agree on the exact cause, all you can do is address all of the following theories regarding HLLE:

1) Stray voltage - Use a titanium ground probe & test your tank for stray voltage.
2) Running carbon - Don’t use it, or use only premium grade carbon.
3) Nutritional deficiency - Feed high quality nutritional foods. Some have had success reversing the effects of HLLE by soaking food in “fish vitamins” and also feeding nori.
