Large and/or Established Tank Coral Maintenance

In seeing all these large, beautiful, grown-in reefs I think of the maintenance I do on my own little 10 gallon. Specifically, fragging and controlling growth as corals reach each other.

How do people with long established tanks handle corals growing into one another, shading each other, or managing corals that get too large and you cannot simply trim a few polyps with a scalpel (leathers, acans, etc)? Once you place things in, do you let nature take its course? I’m especially curious when it comes to corals growing on the main rockwork that you cannot just take out on a whim. As always, pics are necessary!
