Hello everyone,

Im hoping to get some advice on Large angels in a reef tank. I have a 800 gallon display and until recently was keeping a full mixed reef. That was until my favorite fish, my moorish idol, started to eat my zoanthids. It literally ate 400 of my utter chaoz zoanthids overnight. Luckily I had over 1000 and was able to save almost all my zoanthid colonies over the last few weeks.

Because this I am considering getting rid of all Zoanthids and Acans, then switching more toward all SPS and Euphillia. Thus I think that Large Angels are a possibility again. What are peoples experiance with angels and Euphillia. I have Torches, Hammers/Frogspawns,Bubble, Duncans, etc. Do Angels have a history of eating Euphillia? Im sure Im gonna need to get rid of my clam also *CRY*

Im considering going with a Queen Angel, A Emperor Angel, and a Regal Angel. Possibly a Majestic or Blue Girdle if the others play nice.

euphyllia is generally considered on the safer end of the LPS spectrum. i don't recall if he mentions duncans or bubble corals, it's a great video and definitely worth watching if you want to do angels/butterflies in a reef tank

Haven't had problems with any of those corals with any large angels, this includes the majority of Pomancanthus, Holacanthus, Pygoplites, a few from Chaetondoplus and the more common Apolemichthys species. Generally I have only had them eat Zoathids and the more fleshy brain corals, aka Acans, Lobos, Open brains and the like. Search my build threads to see examples.

They are best in a fish only tank. SPS acceptable, , , , , softies/LPS are doomed at some point.
To me, they are gorgeous and worth it to the point that I am about to fill a new tank as " fish Only" and will be primarily angels and butterflies.

Member @Feet4Fish has a nice fish only setup. See his posts and tagging him, im sure he will share pics to show coral/SPS not required to provide color and beauty

See my profile pic. This is piggy.
Piggy was in my reef for about 8 years. I had to find him a new home. He was getting very aggressive with other fish and destroying most corals (Zoa= M&Ms, SPS=toothbrush, xenia=salad)
Every fish is different. Mine was ok for many years, He didn't touch anemones (guarded by an aggressive clown), not touching cabbage mushrooms.
I would not advice you get one...

My 2 cents and experience with a large orange tail emperor (large as in 12+ inches) was every time my husband “fragged” (trying time reach around a colony that couldn’t be slowed lol) our birds nest, he’d try to mount it in our fish only with hopes and dreams. These hopes and dreams would be dashed as soon as the Emperor caught sight of it. He’d turn it into sand every, single, time! Hahaha. I’m not sure I can speak for the Queen or Blue Girdled in the same system as it would normally only last for 2 or 3 minutes after he would take his hand out of the tank, and it was always the Emperor that would seek and destroy first. And I can promise underfeeding was NOT the cause! Hahaha. Like I said just my 2 cents and experiences in the past. Take it or leave it.
