So I’m wanting a large tank of this size if any one knows me I’ve posted designs and such. Well the latest and greatest design has hit my google sketch program and got the stamp of approval from my wife. Tank is a drop down tank the measurements are 12’Lx5’w and the main height of the tank is 32” with the drop down portion being 4’Lx5’Wx6’h that’s large in aspect. Now I have a few questions for those that have large aquariums what kind of lighting do you use?
In theory I would assume standard lights like XR30pro and a lot of them. But with a tank this large I would need about 18 of those at max and well wife was like that’s close to 16 grand in just lights.
So any of you guys have ideas on large tank lighting ideas that won’t force me to sell my liver on the black market?

also if any of you ever want your tank designed I love challenges and can make them pretty accurate as long as I have proper measurements. This thing is detailed through for now not finished .

Hi Jose

The XR30 G4/5 will be fine for the main tank, they have a fairly wide spread. My tank is 3 metres long and I’ve got 4 G4 Pros and there’s no issue with coverage but you might have to double up because of the width. But you might get away with less than 18 as that sounds a lot.

I think the depth of the drop off may be an issue for light penetration though or at least need checking

If you haven’t already, I would send the measurement to Ecotech support and ask them what they think and options, they helped me a lot when planning.

Oh and the cost. My tank is around 530usg, so a bit smaller than this, it’s all high end equipment so you’d better brace yourself, or at least accept the cost, if it even matters if your thinking of doing this.

Oh and on selling your liver, that may not be enough, so prepare your wife, family, oh and distant friends and relatives they may be called upon! Lol

Oh god yeah we plan on going this route. The wife and I will be putting about 500 a month for the next 12 years as I will be retiring out of the military by then. This being said we currently have a 225 and will most likely push to a 400 in years 7 or 8 so that I can buy the equipment and have on hand knowledge on a tank that size.

or I could win the lotto, then I would just get a tank and build around it lol

Also thanks for the suggestion of talking to ECOTech I’ll send them an email.
