What is the largest hermit crab that is typically available in the trade that is reef/fish safe? Thanks.

In my opinion, "reef safe large hermit crab" is an oxymoron. Even if they don't resort to straight up eating your coral, they will bulldoze everything in their path knocking over any frags or small corals you have. The way they walk and climb on everything has caused a loss of coral from constant irritation alone in my tank.

To put it easily and in line with what everyone said, the larger the hermit, the more things on the menu. I happen to love the small Caribbean blue leg hermits personally.

I love hermits, but yeah, they will be opportunistic. With larger ones it’s so much about coral, but other slow and/or sessile inverts, especially snails.

Snails are probably the most important CUC in tanks, and can live a very long time, but big hermits will wreck your snails.
