I found this shell off NJ about 10 years back after a good north east blow. It’s by far the largest I ever found, which got me wondering how old do you think this snail was?
Funny, I'm going to a gathering of mollusk experts on Saturday at the Bailey Mathews National Shell Museum on Sanibel Island in SW Florida. Two of the presentations are about trying to determine the age of mollusks. One is about the old way of counting layers of shell under a microscope. But scientists aren't sure these are year by year layers or season by season or even something else entirely. The other is about a new method using lasers???
I have no idea, but given that I've seen my share of moon shells, I guess it's more than any that I have ever seen! Nice find.
