I have a huge red mithrax crab (two actually) in a tank I used to QT ocean live rock for hitchhikers. I’m wondering if I move them to my DT as part of the CUC will they be able to fend off my melanurus? They really are big. The biggest one has a body almost the size of a half dollar coin and claws almost 2” long. My melanurus has already taken out half the snail population (which I’ll replace with turbos) and he’s about 4” long.

It’s a 50/50 chance. You may manage it if you can get the crabs as close to the rock as possible but also keep the Mel happy. I have a 2” sally light foot crab in with my 4” Chloropterus and 4.5” Iridis. It’s really just luck of the draw.
