I have had a large toadstool that grow from it's half inch frag plug onto two large rocks. It's base is easily 6-8 inches in diameter and the top of it when fully open is around 15-16 inches. I've had it in my 340 gallon mixed reef for 4 years. It's always been healthy. The In the last 3 months it formed 3 probably half inch holes in the top of it. The holes were yellow and had sand in them. I did my best to get the snad out. I suspect my dragon wrasse kept dumping sand on the coral and/or in the holes. The dragon wrasse is gone now! Rehomed to a predator only tank.

That said, the Toad stool has since fallen over, it lays across the too rocks now When I try moving it, it leans over more trying to grow a different direction. So, I don't know if it's trying to get away from something or get more light or just isn't happy.

In the end though, the bottom 6 inches of its base is yellow on the outside, it's top 3-4 inches is purple and healthy? It's almost like the bottom 6-8 inches is dying (at the base) and the top half of the coral is healthy. It's always been discolored on the bottom. I thought it was just because of its size. It would always have algae on the outside or cyano, etc. It's base was never clean except when it was tiny.

The strange part of all this is the wholes in the top are almost completely healed up now. But the corals leans more. The spines come out daily but only maybe a 1/4 of what they used to. I don't know if it's dying or healing and becoming its old healthy self and its just taking a few months to heal.

All of my Xenia died in the last 6 months as well. However, I have two types of mushrooms (orange Ricordia and bubble mushrooms) that both are reproducing and looking healthy. The only difference in the last 6 months is going from phosphates consistently at .20 ppm and above to .04-.1 ppm. And nitrates going from 40-50 ppm to 15-25 ppm.

Recent IP test showed nothing harmful or toxic. I was low on iodine and manganese. PH Has been running lower (around 8.0) due to vodka dosing. But other than that, things are doing well. Acros, Duncans, massive Chalice, Other SPS and LPS all looking good.

xenia love iodine and dirty water. Same for leather? If you are trying to color up acros you are going in the right direction but you should rehome the leather?

The leather has been through a lot! I thought leathers could live in most any water conditions? It is healing. I'm dosing manganese and iodine trace elements. (Along with red sea A, B, C, D Trace elements). I had switched to all for reef in place of red sea. And corals didn't look as pretty as with the red sea trace elements. So, switching back. I'm thinking it might recover, since the holes in it are almost completely closed shut. But, it may look ugly for a few months.

I also noticed last night hundreds (if not thousands) of bristleworms on my sand bed. Will they damage corals?

I recently got rid of my dragon wrasse that was demolishing any coral not glued down... Now everything is coming out of the sand work. I'm thinking he ate the worms, now their populations are booming. Would bristle worms damage corals?
