Hi guys,

Weird question but my pet lobster molted and Im unsure what to do with the shell! Should i leave it in there as ive heard they eat some of it for calcium for there new shell or take it out and maybe add calcium to his tank! Help.... not sure the protocol on this one lol! If i leave the shell how long should i leave it!? Dont want it ruining his water!!!

I have read articles that say sometimes they do but there is no information as to when they might start or how much. The articles said it's to help harden the shell so you'd think if he were going to eat it, it would be almost right away. I would say to leave it for a day or two. If he doesn't touch it then remove it because I too would be concerned about it fouling the water although I don't know how quickly an exoskeleton can affect water quality. It's not like decaying fish. Hopefully others will chime in. :-)

Keep it as a yardstick for growth

Apparently it's not seen that often (by keepers at public aquariums, etc) which is probably why there isn't much info in general. I probably would have thought I was seeing double if I were you. LOL That is a weird looking pic. :-)

I had freshwater crayfish that ate their molt. They looked like cannibals. It was definitely weird to see. :-) Maybe Larry already chowed down on the part that's buried. Haha.

Was so shocking last night lol! Wish i could have seen it but next year will happen again lol
I read an article that said they can molt 25 times in 7 years. Wow! It slows down as they reach adulthood which I guess Larry is?

Yeah he was a grocery store lobster so def an adult! Once every 1 to 2 years now! Hes gonna outlive me lol
I have some grocery store oysters that I think they will outlive me. I'm going to have to bequeath them to someone in my will. Haha.

many more to come

It's like looking at the ghost of Larry. Haha I wonder if it would make a good soup if boiled (but don't tell Larry). LOL
Haha i actually haven't eaten lobster since he came home with me lol! Doesnt feel right! We eat scallops and shrimps together instead! Mine is cooked though lol
