So i knew it was to good to be true and my tank was running to smooth! Ive been over feeding my lobster and his bioload got to be to heavy im guessing!! I had a nitrite and nitrate spike! I did at 30% water change and dosed my tank with prime to detoxify the toxins! After water change my nitrates went down to approx 25ppm and nitrites went down to .25ppm! I also might be overcleaning and not giving my bacteria a chance to flourish as it is a new tank! My lobster has been in there 3 weeks! Any advice on how to get my tank parameters back to zero nitrites and 5ppm! Should i do another water change while im waiting for more beneficial bacteria to grow? Is he gonna be ok until that happens??? Need some advice plz!!!

If nitrite is actually 0.25 ppm (not really any concern), then a reading of 25 ppm nitrate may actually be as low as 0 ppm nitrate, because with some kits there's a 100x multiplier of nitrite reading false high as nitrate.

Which kits would these be? The new(ish) Hanna high range nitrate checker as well?

Been using these strips and going to buy a master kit today! My tank guy did water testing a few times and it was pretty consistant with the strips results!!

Is there a reasonably priced master kit i should buy??? Have aquavital strips and kits for calcium and alkalinity as my guy said its more of a concern for my lobster

If your tank guy uses test strips, I'd find a new tank guy asap.

post a pic of your tank. I bet five variables shown in pics will confirm two things:

-you have no dangerous spike in reality of any ammonia which is the dangerous one

-you don't have a risk for cycling variables to undo in the future; don't test for ammonia or nitrite for the rest of your reefing in this setup. Those two are fine even with variation.

spend your money on digital testers for alk and ph and calcium if you want to run tests.

the #1 giveaway of a false alert post is that losses aren't in the title. its always a non digtal test kit + factor of old cycling rules that allow for undoing cycles, that's how we're all trained initially and only nerding out in forums can give true cycling resolve and peace of mind.

So basically im freaking out for nothing??? Lol! I lost a nights sleep worried about my lobster!! Love him more then one should love a lobster lol!

The exact multiplier number is not known by me for all kits, but the Tropic Marin is 100x (IIRC), and the Salifert is also high.

The Hanna does have nitrite interference, but much less. More like 2x. Red Sea is 5-10x:

So which kit is best to order on amazon! I would like as much accuracy as possible!! What would be the most important parameter in my cold water tank then beside salinity of course, for my lobster???

To be honest, I do not know what is the most important set of parameters for a lobster.

Strips aren’t worth the money is what I’ve been told. A LFS should test your water when you buy your kit. Then you can compare those numbers to your numbers when you do the test again at your house.

Fair lol! Not to many maritime lobster pet owners out there but he is an invertebrate so ive been researching that!! Guess i will just try my best!!! He seems fine though so thats a good sign! Will keep dosing with prime and monitor for a few days! If not down will do another 20% water change! Im basically waiting for more good bacteria to form in his tank!! Wont be feeding him for a few days but they can live a long time wothout eating so a few days wont be a problem! Thanks for the advice!!!

findings based on pics:

-water is clear and not in a state of distress.
-the tank shows enough surface area and dilution, including that HOB filter inlet and its eventual surface area, to match any decent presentation in reefing. you aren't extremely low surface area, for example
-you aren't compounding bioloads + nine big fish, most do. that means your current surface area is worked very little by the lobster and much by its feed, but you're within surface area ratios of all reefs and all reefs can take some feeding errors without loss.
-I only could find three heh

if someone dumps half a feed container by accident thats removable and can be detected without any ammonia kit, its visual. barring any physical errors, common daily feeds and the occasional minor blast is just what we all do. you can cease testing for ammonia and nitrite in this tank as long as it stays wet, even if you add some fish. there's plenty of shock absorber room here-no tipping point is approached.

before paying money for test kits for alk, pH, calcium, mg search out test kit comparison threads for the particular brands you may consider. if those posts show constant stated misreads, or disagreeing test levels off the same water sample per brands in that thread, don't buy those brands or types of kits.

be searching among digital kits for items you want to measure, and if those are cost prohibitive, forego the measure then- dont feel pressured to buy simply one step up kits from where you're at and feel they're accurate.

all you can do anyway for that lobster is provide cleaner than normal waters vs stagnant waters/ weekly preemptive water changes using clean verified safe water is pretty much it, and keep up good feeding. be exportive, willing to change water, vs relying on system to be in cruise control and that is best you can do in my opinion.

the way to manage this layout is simple weekly water changes, never a reaction to testing for waters that weekly water changes will always keep in fine balance here. its about preemptive small work efforts, and not any reaction runs to buy anything or make a new testing angle. if its not antlered in sps corals then you've got a mighty easy setup to run, temp ideals relative to the species of lobster will be the goal.

Your dosing prime for ammonia, I guess. If so, how high is it?
