My montiporas grow a lot, especially the red. The other day i notice that one of my clams did not unfolded its mantel in a normal way. Just that part was below my montipora and I decided to take away a part in order to let the light go down to my clam.

The result - tja...........

However - note the thickness of the coral - nearly 10 mm. And the clam get light and the mantel looks normal again

Hystrix continue to grow very good and @atoll - this time it did not affect the growth pattern at all - you know what I mean. 3 weeks with active oxidator.

In which case another reason for it. Glad you ruled out the Oxydator as being the possible culprit.

For the moment I start an experiment with my skimmer. It should only run at pH over 8.25 and below 8.15. I also disconnect the skimmer cup - the skimate will return to the return section.

what's the motivation? Are there things in the water you think you may want to keep more of?

For the moment I´m low in both PO4 and NO3 I read 0.09 in phosphate but last two times I compare with Triton tests - my Hanna show between 0.06 and 0.08 to much. Will do a new Triton test next week. I want to keep bacteria, organic matter and amino acids in the water as much as possible. Food for filtrating animals among other things. I have a very dense population of corals, many LPS and softies. I have a small reversed refuge. The biomass of corals is rather large and I´m afraid that the oxygen demand during the DT:s dark hours will deplete the oxygen level for me: I´m not sure that the small refuge will produce enough of oxygen during night. I can be wrong in this but - for the moment I´m not able to measure oxygen constantly and will not risk it to run completely without a skimmer. I´m also convinced that the photosynthetic process first will consume available CO2 before it starts to convert HCO3 and/or CO3 . In this moment i start the skimmer when pH i lower than 8.14 in pH. Why 8.14 - yes is rather close to the equilibrium point for a CO2 level in the air of 400 ppm. It means if the CO2 level in water will be higher than the equilibrium point let it be - you can degas it from the water with the skimmer. During light time - The photosynthesis consume CO2 and the skimmer will be off up to around 8.24. at this point - starting the skimmer means that you can inject new CO2 from the air into the water. CO2 that the photosynthesis can use.

Now we will see if it works

A little about my clams.

All my clams have been around 4 - 5 cm in length when I got them. This picture shows three of them today. The one to the left - 2 years in my aquarium - 16 cm long and a height of 9 cm. In the middle - 3 years and x * x cm. The one to the right - 1 year and 7 * 3.5 cm.

This picture below show my smallest and my third largest (3 years in my aquarium and x * x cm) . Just below the mantel you can see something very interesting. It is a white precipitate at the window. It was not there yesterday evening (I cleaned my windows last night) The mantel touch the glass in that position and - IMO - it is a calcification that have take place in lesser than 24 hours. I see this every time I clean my windows.
