I've made incredible strides in dropping my phosphates from .79 to .04 in a couple of weeks using Lathanum Chloride, thanks Randy for suggesting. Now my questions, is there any hazard/danger in using it long term in my ATO reservoir which I add Kalk to. I could see using half the dose 2.5 ml/ Lt. for maintenance. Much cheaper than GFO.

Unfortunately, I don't think you can put lanthanum into limewater without precipitating lanthanum oxide/hydroxide from solution, removing the lanthanum and lowering the alkalinity.

Thanks Randy, that's what I was afraid of. Furthermore just spoke with Lance Ichinotsubo at his shop and he told me the Lathanum will only bring me down to a certain point then the Po4 would plato. So I will continue dosing for a mother week to test his theory. Super nice guy by the way.

You're welcome.

I don't know about the plateau issue as I think some people have taken it pretty low, but I've not studied what happens at low phosphate values to lanthanum phosphate/carbonate precipitation. :)

Happy Reefing. :)

lanthanum How this best way to dose and how much?

Mike, I can only describe my experience. If you search elsewhere you will find precise details. But here goes:
Ingredients:
SeaKlear Lathanum Chloride: Amazon.com : SeaKlear Phosphate Remover CR Treatment Solution for Pools, 1-Quart, includes 4oz bottle of natural Clarifier : Swimming Pool Clarifiers : Patio, Lawn & Garden
Syringe for measuring in ml.
1-2Liter container with measuring markings for Liter.
RO/DI Water
Method to fine tune drip dose like IV. I got the IV and drip line on Amazon.
MOst Important: 10 micron filter sock.

Recipe is 5ml/ liter of RO/DI water. I did 1-2 liters at a time, then check Phosphate. Repeat.
Drip rate was about 1 drop per every 2 seconds into the 10 micron filter sock (very impotant)

Very important also, do yourself a favor. Get a Hanna Phosphate tester: Hanna Checker Phosphate PO4 Colorimeter - Bulk Reef Supply

Thanks for the info. I have using a Hanna low range tester and it also reads zero. I don't know if i trust it.

One thing to watch out for that I was told about today and just realized while cleaning my glass. Overused and it will bind a cloud unto your glass. I was able to take some off but I expect it will come off with time with more cleaning. I can't imagine what it might do to Acrylic. Needless to say, I'm officially switching to GFO now that it's a manageable level.

I agree that trying to get the solids out with a sock or other fine filter is important. Also watch alkalinity as it can reduce it.

Be sure what you use has lanthanum chloride as the only ingredient listed.

Also, this should be only in extreme cases. I was told that fish gills could be affected using this. I think I'm seeing the proof, my fairy wrasse has been lying on the sand bed today. All other marine life look OK so far.
