I have maintained a coldwater marine tank with some lava rock in the past, though leaching from the rocks (and other freshwater substrate) likely caused the never ending diatom bloom in said systemI believe it has high metal content which isn't a good thing necessarily. . Plus, the surface area of lava rock (and thus its biological filtration capabilities) is inferior to that of ceramic bio-media in the hobby.
