I've heard of fish buddying up that aren't the same species or in a natural symbiotic relationship. But I got a couple of fish that I wonder if more people have noticed behaviour like this.
Little story:
I started my tank back in March and after 6 weeks of cycling with 50% liferock 50% deadrock and after those 6 weeks I added 2 clowns, a midas blenny and a Lawnmower blenny.
A week later noticed that my lawnmower blenny wasn't really eating all the types of algae that were growing in my tank and I started to look on the web and found out that a foxface (for at least a few years considering my tank size and their adult size) would be a good addition to my tank and luckily for me my LFS had a little one that I could take home.
After a bit of acclimation period of my foxface I dropped my fish in. Put the lights out (no corals yet) and went to bed.
In the morning I noticed that my foxface was grazing my back wall that was filled with algae and I couldn't find my lawnmower anywhere. So I got scared he jumped and looked everywhere and eventually found him somewhere hiding in a rocks. (He never did that before so I thought I maybe made the mistake with the foxface) and this kept on going for a few days making me really worried.
Up until 2 weeks ago where I saw the 2 swimming together and grazing together. The foxface grazes the big chunks and then the blenny finishes the rocks after it (yes they literally take turns) in the 2 weeks since then i've never seen them apart.
The foxface hangs out before the hole that the blenny hides in for nighttime and in daytime he scares all the fish away from the blenny (My midas was occasionally mean to my lawnmower.... well not so much anymore with that big guy guarding his back)
If this keeps on i'll have to get a bigger tank.. because I'd rather get a bigger tank for the foxface then to split these guys apart. It's just so fun to watch them together.
Do you guys have stories like this? Or is this quite common? I am very new to saltwater after years of freshwater and besides my pufferfish i've never had fish with this much personality.
Obligatory Picture: This is them together. My foxface is a bit stressed because I was taking pictures but normally he's a very shiny yellow fish hanging out with his mowing buddy.
