I saw one of these in a lfs yesterday and thought it was a beautiful looking fish. I was surprised that the salesman told me it was reef safe, as I thought all groupers were not suitable for a reef. I checked it out on Live Aquaria and it is listed as "with caution". It sounds like the main issues are with shrimp and ornamental inverts and the fact that it is a large messy eater. Live Aquaria lists it as needing a 125 gallon aquarium (I find their estimates to be accurate, while many of the other online fish stores seem to underestimate how much space is needed).
If I got a leaflip grouper it would be going in a 150 gallon mixed reef tank that would definitely be fairly aggressive for a reef tank.
Has anyone had any experiences with these fish or other groupers in a mixed tank?
