Leaky bulkhead

I really considerd silicon. maybe the old gaskets were bad.
Bad gaskets or overtightened gaskets likely. In my case, I could not disassemble plumbing so had to recourse to this BUT it worked !!

so this is ok for my needs 1 inch slip x slip bulkhead

the hole size is throwing me off. I need it to be the exact same as

Are you sure it’s not leaking through the threads. Had a similar problem last month. Thought it was gasket but was poor fit between nut and threads. Used pipe dope instead of Teflon tape. Messy as heck but no more leak

If it states 1" bulkhead that is the opening size in the bulkhead not the hole size. Hole size typically refers to the size of the hole that would need to be present or drilled to accommodate that bulkhead.

Nut should not be submerged and should be on dry side of tank. Gasket placed over threads pushed up to flange side of bulkhead goes on wet/submerged side of bulkhead. There is no need for pipe dope or teflon tape if it is put on correctly.

Both of these are correct. Just make sure it is 1".

Funny how misinformation persists even with things as relatively simple as bulkheads. As some have noted, the gasket always goes under the flange. Doesn’t matter whether the flange or nut is on the wetside or the dryside. Bulkhead will work fine either way as long as the gasket is under the flange. If the gasket is placed properly, there is no way for water to seep between the nut and the outside bulkhead threads unless the bulkhead is physically damaged. So no need for Teflon tape or paste on the outside bulkhead threads. You can use silicone sealant on bulkheads, between the flange and gasket and gasket and glass, though it really isn’t necessary for most applications. Gasket does not deform as long as you keep the flange still and just torque down the nut. I’ve had bulkhead gaskets last 20 years, but since they are cheap, probably best to just replace them .... or even the entire bulkhead.

I’ve moved almost completely to slip x slip bulkheads. Eliminates almost all bulkhead cracking problems.

Ok, guys, I purchased new bulkheads and I think we have a seal. I am so excited. I have water in both overflows. I have marked levels. Yes, I am doing my leak test. How long should I perform leak test?
:) :)
