Thanks, he was very young there. Now he is twice that size and it is hard to keep enough clams for him.

I get black worms at my lfs. IMO, a new copperband really needs time to gain strength after being caught , shipped to a distributor, shipped again to a lfs and all in probably less-than-ideal conditions. If there is any way you can maybe separate the cbb from the other fish.. even say with some eggcrate, to let him eat in peace and grow strong.. and if there any aggressive fish towards him..I think you will have more success instead of just watching him get skinnier and then dying.
Also, the cbb cannot tolerate aggression as it is a very peaceful, somewhat timid fish.
If you have other fish that are aggressive to it.. I would consider removing-homing the aggressors or re-homing the cbb.

Here’s mine..she’s about 3-4 inches big and her friends in the tank are a foxface, sailfin tang, one saddleback clown, a diamond goby, and a benghai.. all peaceful except when clown gets protective of its anemones..then everyone just stays away.

does everybody get their live black worms online? I was given a link for aquatic foods. are they the go to?

I order from them regularly without any issues. Mostly for finicky wrasses but all the fish love them. The black worm keeper makes keeping/rinsing a lot easier although you can probably make your own. I think Paul B had a nice diy blackworm keeper awhile back.

Just make sure to tell the wife/roomate/partner that there are worms in the fridge.

Yeah, I forgot that part and believe me when I say do NOT repeat my mistake. Momma was Not happy.

OTOH, my fish got their own fridge after the "incident"

Is it better to get a copper band early, like one of the first additions, or much later after your tank is established?

It doesn't seem to matter. But if you already have one, you may not be able to get another one. I can't put in another copperband as my present one does not do nice.
