Apparently moray eels really really like to eat crabs. i just got my new clean up crew and as it turns out my golden tail moray eel was hungry because a little while after i put my emerald crabs into the aquarium he began to swim around and search the tank. I foolishly thought he was just going to chill in his cave while i added the new inhabitants. Boy was i wrong, after first trying to bite into every single bag floating in the tank he then tried to climb around the bags and out of the water thankfully he was unsuccessful in his attempts. after the excitement of the floating bags wore off he then poked around the hermit crabs but found them unappealing, he began to search the rock work thoroughly and that is where he found my brand spanking new emerald crabs . i watched as he began to move very slowly between the rocks then i saw him stop moving and be perfectly still. All of a sudden he darted deep into the rock and began twisting and shaking violently, i watch as he pulled a crab by its leg and then did a barrel roll and pulled the leg right off. i thought that maybe he would be satisfied with the crab legs but in just few seconds he darted back into the hole and bit the body of the crab picking it up and bringing it back to his cave, where he proceeded to swallow the whole crab in less than 30 seconds. so today i learned that eels and crabs are not good room mates. hope this was informative to someone and entertaining to most.

and i am not adding any new fish just a clean up crew so that is why i decided to take the risk and not quarantine my new friends.

Sounds like you had quite the morning

Well of course, they are one of the main staples of an eels diet. If you research an animal prior to buying you will save yourself further issues.

i have done tons of research lol, and i thought it would be ok but unfortunately i was wrong. you cant win em all and you cannot always predict what an individual animal will do.

For those who like the eel "shape" but want the crabs etc,, consider the convict/engineer goby. will grow quickly to 12" and eventually to up to 2 feet and when big eat essentially nothing. {Biologists could find nothing but "slime" in their guts when they tried to find what therir diet was,) An extra benefit....everyday your tank will look different! (Where;d this rock come from?)
