I have only had one leather. And it did not do well in my tank. I think I had it in a bad spot for lighting. Also I may have knocked the rockwork on it a few times which contributed to its demise. But I never really noticed any chemical warfare going on from it or any other softies in my tank. However I too have heard of this. Maybe someone on #reefsquad has more experience with this.

It all depends on the size of your tank and how much space you can keep between the corals. Can it be done, absolutely. I have 3 leathers in my mixed system which is mostly LPS and SPS. I just keep them far enough away to not get bothered by the sweepers of the other corals and they are doing great. Just remember that that can get very large is kept long enough. So keep that in mind when/if placing it in your tank.

I have a mixed lps and soft coral. I had a short polyp Goni near a leather coral. The rock sort of had two good sized indentions carved out so it was perfect for the Goni and the leather was already on the rock, which is a rather large rock. Nonetheless, recently I’ve had some issues with STN on the Goni. I have another Goni doing very well in another location-many suggested here that the leather could very well have caused the issue I have moved it of course and nursing it, but it’s something to consider.

Leathers will secrete alleopathic chemicals into the water, no doubt.

But you can keep them with other corals. Dont keep too many, run some carbon and keep up on water changes and you will be fine.

I have a LPS dominant tank. Recently stumbled across a little toadstool frag at my LFS so had to grab it. No issues so far. Others have given good info. Carbon is definitely a good idea
