nly to find my leather coral looks like it has a dead spot. I've never had this issue before and would appreciate some insights/advice

I don’t have much experience with this I may be wrong but it looks like something got hungry in your absence. I may be wrong but if that’s the issue you should feed it high quality food with some amino acids. Hopefully it will heal on its own.

Have seen this a few times at the LFS, hole in center of toadstool. My toadstool had the same issues with central tissue necrosis, but now there is just some scarring. My fear is that once tissue is lost it won't grow back, but the coral should continue to grow around it.

My guess is the center wasn't getting enough flow and detritus accumulated, causing an infection. You are keeping toadstool, a high flow requiring coral, with Euphylia which need very low flow. My suggestion would be to move it where it gets more flow. Best of luck!

One of two things happening here:
The leather is beginning a shed OR
THERE IS A WORM WITHIN that’s starting to attack tissue if the leather

I've had this happen before. Typically a result of detritus settling and not being cleared out. It eventually causes a dead spot. Keep it clean and make sure the tank parameters are stable and it will recover. In my case, I couldn't clean out the detritus often enough and it formed a hole down the center of the toadstool. Actually started causing the toadstool to rot from the inside out. I eventually ripped the dying toadstool out so it wouldn't kill my tank since it was fairly large. Some flesh was left on the rock and now I have two mini toadstools growing in place of the old one.
