Leather decomposing?

Not sure what is going on with this leather. Should I cut my losses and pull it before it would my tank? Looks like it is decomposing. The original colony is right below it looking fine. Everything else in tank is happy.

On that was a cover from an old powerhead that died in another tank. It had a solid layer of coraline on it nice deep purple, I have been scraping it off a little at a time to seed this tank. Just never took it out. Any idea what causes this kind of decomposition?
 
Blade, scissors and then rubberband to a rock till they attach.
Not sure what caused it though...
