Led conversion

Someone give me a good reason NOT to do this. I have two extra bright white outdoor landscape led lights (round spotlights with 6 individual LEDs per unit). One of these lights up half of the front of my house so their really bright. They're like $200 a piece. I am considering mounting them on my canopy overt tank. I am upgrading from a 36g to a 75g and I am worried my 55led fixture will not have enough juice for the bigger tank.

What could go wrong

Its possible that it would work, those spot lights are more than likely 50watt, but it should light up that tank quite a bit.

It'll probably be plenty of light but it'll look like poo. Your other LED may be fine for a portion of the tank, depends on the light and dimensions of the tank...

What do you mean it will look bad? Meaning the mounting? Or the actual light in the tank. There are 6 LEDs with 35 degree lenses for each. I can figure out the mounting to make them look good.

My guess is that you'll bleech your coral. Light spread is part of what's not gonna make that work. After all they are spotlights

I agree.....it will be the wrong color spectrum. Maybe if you supplement with some blues?

I'll play with it and let you all know how it goes. I have some blues on my main led's. Maybe a good mix will magically appear. We'll see.

In addition to not looking so great i dont think those lights would provide the correct spectrum for coral photosynthesis. If it wasnt built for a tank you shouldn't put it over one.

I wouldnt exactly say that about leds nowadays. There are a ton of outdoor led units, meaning moisture resistant outdoor units that we can easily mount, and that their colors are fully adjustable.
Now speaking about the ones hes planning on using, are around the 8-10k range if im not mistaken, much bluer than using a 5k spot light that Lot of people have used.
