It's that time again. Time to replace 3 Metal Halide bulbs and 8 T5 bulbs on my light fixture. Not cheap to keep doing this, so I always start looking at options every time I have to do this. Again. Tank is over 4 years old and doing well, so I always hesitate changing anything, but willing to explore better/more efficient ways to do tis.

Looking for those with experience to chime in.

2 BIG factors I need to be considered.
1. The tank is SPS dominated. Translation: Needs a lot of light.
2. The tank is 27" tall. Translation: Needs deeply penetrating lights.

Currently looking at Maxspect Razor R420r, maybe get 3 of the 120W fixtures.

Thoughts?

Thanks!!

That's a great choice. I run 2 of the maxspect 120w's over my 48X24X24 tank and I'm mostly SPS dominated. A good friend of mine is running 3 of the same units over his 72X24X24 tank and there's plenty of light.

With my SPS dominated tank I only run the unit at about 65% at its peak. So plenty of light to spare.

Just make sure to climatize your corals to the light. They're a lot brighter than you think.

When I switched from my 2X 175W MH and 2 T5's to the two maxspects. I ended up burning a bunch of corals just from having it at 50%.

I have no complaints about this light at all.

I have two led reef breeders over my tank i have zoas sps and lps. I have no lenses on mine . Definaltly wont have to worry about needing enough light for the sps im willing to bet you could bleach them if your not careful. I have also got good color on my corals. My green birds nest hated the leds finally starting to get color again.

Check out Steve's LEDs they have nice kits for sps dominated tanks using luxeon 3w LEDs with great par reading not cheap Chinese LEDs ! Kits are fairly easy to assemble for the inexperienced
